Turtle Mountain Community College (TMCC), a tribal community college in Belcourt, North Dakota, has agreed to provide a free college course on basic computer training to participants in the National Indian Council on Aging’s (NICOA) and Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). Additionally, a free Google Chromebook will be given to each course participant after they have successfully completed the eight-week course.
The class will be taught by TMCC students, with assistance from their instructors. The course begins March 8th and ends May 3rd.
“Understanding basic computer skills will help our elders stay socially connected and learning about cyber security will help them stay safe while they do so,” said Lynn Wise, program manager of NICOA’s SCSEP in North Dakota.
SCSEP helps job-seeking elders gain the skills necessary to re-enter the workforce. The program provides grant sponsored income to participants while they train in their communities, which prepares them for regular employment. NICOA is one of 17 national grantees providing this service, and one of two providing opportunity to American Indian elders in the U.S. Click here to apply to the program.
TMCC is located on the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation, 10 miles from the Canada-U.S. border in the north central portion of North Dakota. Belcourt is the center of the reservation community’s government, commerce, and education for the more than 10,000 enrolled members of the tribe.
