Bachelor of Science

ADDITIONAL NAVIGATION

The Department of Teacher Education offers two Bachelors of Science degrees: Elementary Education,
and Secondary Science. Upon graduation will be licensed in, Elementary Education 1-8, and
Secondary Science 5-12.

The academic programs are academically rigorous in order to prepare outstanding candidates for the teaching profession. Integral to this academic excellence is an understanding of  Native culture, which is woven throughout the curriculum. It is expected that the values and principles of Native culture will be embraced and modeled through dispositions reflective of culturally responsive teaching. All three programs are designed around a cohort model learning, highlighting the importance of collaboration and teamwork as necessary preludes to being change agents dedicated to culturally responsive teaching.

During the first semester of coursework, teacher education students are required to take the Praxis I exam. Students must pass the Praxis I exam by the end of the 2nd semester in order to stay in the program.

Accountability For Programs that Prepare Teachers

Schools that prepare teachers for initial State Certification or Licensure are required to provide a report annually to the state and to the general public. The states must submit to the U.S. Department of Education, and make available to the public, an annual report containing school and state-level information. This report can be accessed by following the Accountability For Programs that Prepare Teachers link, by selecting ND on the map, and locating Turtle Mountain Community College from the worksheet.

The first step in the application process is to submit a transcript(s) and an Intent to Apply form. Minimum GPA requirement is 2.5. After a transcript analysis has been completed and found to meet the entrance requirements by a member of the Teacher Education Department faculty, you will be asked to proceed to step two of the application process which requires letters of recommendation, a resume’, official transcript(s), and a short essay describing your philosophy of education. A completed application packet will be evaluated by the Admissions Committee and those candidates that meet the requirements for teacher education will be invited for an interview and impromptu writing evaluation. Nearly all courses in teacher education incorporate some level of technical computer skills, therefore you will need to have some proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Jenzabar, and Canvas.

The Teacher Education Department offers a baccalaureate degree in elementary education and secondary science education. The secondary degree allows graduates to apply for a composite degree teaching license in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics.

Both degree programs are designed around a cohort model learning community, reflecting the importance of collaboration, support, and teamwork as necessary precursors to becoming effective change agents in the education systems across Indian Country.
