Nizhoni Smith, a member of the Navajo Nation (originally from the Leech Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota), earned a Juris Doctor from the University of North Dakota and a certificate of completion at the Pre-Law Summer Institute from the American Indian Law Center in Albuquerque, NM. While in law school, Ms. Smith worked as a legal intern for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and also as summer law clerk for the Ho-Chunk Nation, where she was involved with editing the Tribe’s first volume of its Tribal Court Reporter. She was also active on a local and national basis with the Native American Law Students Association. Ms. Smith currently works in the Appeals Department for a Medicaid/Medicare health plan and represents the Plan at administrative hearings.
