Robert Old Rock is a member of the Spirit Lake Nation and comes from the Cut Head band of Sioux. He has lived on the Spirit Lake Reservation all his life, leaving only to attend boarding school and college. Robert attended Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, and the Humbolt Institute in Minneapolis. He graduated from Minot State University in 1985 with a B.A. in Psychology and Counseling. He has been an Addiction counselor in the adolescent area for the N.D. State Hospital, then a Student support counselor for the University of North Dakota. He was the head of the Mental Health Program for the Spirit Lake Nation and returned to the University Of North Dakota, School of Medicine and worked in the Family Medicine Dept, as Administrative Officer for the Bush and Northwest Area Foundation’s grant in HIV Prevention and education in the State of North Dakota with the five tribes. Spirit Lake Nation, Three Affiliated Tribes, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, and the Trenton Indian Service Area. Robert also worked in the Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service Office as a Public Health Analyst, and the Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairman’s Health Board as Director of the Native Men’s Health Initiative. Robert has always been an advocate for culturally responsive teaching.
